Flamsteed’s Correspondence

A considerable amount of Flamsteed’s Correspondence still survives scattered across a number of institutions and individuals around the world. Collected together by Eric Forbes and transcribed and annotated by Lesley Murdin and Frances Willmoth, it was published in three volumes between 1995 and 2002. Between them, the three volumes run to over 3000 pages. Each volume begins with an introduction which sets the context and has an appendix containing related documents such as the founding Warrants, accounts and other related material as well as a comprehensive index.

The volumes have been digitised by Google, but are available in preview only. At one time, the Google search function however allowed the whole of each volume to be searched allowing the pages on on which individual words or names to be found, which was an invaluable aid to tracking down all references rather than just those listed in the index. Regrettably, by 2025, with these particular volumes, the search function had become very unreliable and therefore of limited value.
