The reference in the caption to the ‘Old Observatory’ was unnecessary, but presumably used, because at that time, the South Building was was sometimes referred to as the ‘New Observatory’ Much later, following the Observatory’s move to Herstmonceux in the 1950s, the buildings at Greenwich did formally become known as the ‘The Old Royal Observatory’. All the versions of the card except this one have a black splodge in the centre. Here, the negative has been cleaned up prior to printing, only to be replaced by a hair!
