The sign to the left of the double gates is advertising nine of the different postcards produced by the Royal Observatory that were on sale at the time. Decorators are at work, with a painter balanced on a step ladder outside one of the Octagon Room windows. According to the Astronomer Royal’s reports, the exterior of the Octagon Room was painted in 1933/4 and again in 1937/8. They also state that the Astrographic Dome (top left) was painted with aluminium paint in 1934/5, from which one can conclude that the picture was taken during the summer of 1937. |
