Benedict Chapman was appointed as Assistant by Nevil Maskelyne in succession to John Crosley. He was succeeded by Joseph Garnett.
Circumstantial evidence suggests he may have been the same Benedict Chapman who went on to become Master of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1839. This Chapman graduated from Gonville and Caius in 1792 as sixth wrangler (the sixth best mathematician in his year at the University). He was also well known to William Gooch who had been selected by Maskelyne to assist George Vancouver as astronomer on his expedition to the north-west coast of America and who had graduated from Gonville and Caius as second wrangler in 1791. He was also at Caius at the same time as another of Maskelyne’s assistants, John Brinkley, who had graduated in 1788 as Senior Wrangler.
He was elected a junior fellow of Caius in 1792 and a senior fellow in 1798, retaining his fellowship until 1820. In 1794 he was employed as usher and second master at the Perse School in Cambridge, being ordained Deacon in the same year. In 1795, he was ordained a Priest and became Master of the Perse – a post he retained until 1799. In 1818, he was presented with the living of Ashdon Essex by his College, which he retained until his death. After an absence of 20 years, he returned to Cambridge as Master of his old College in 1839.
