The Herstmonceux Conferences

The Observatory’s national and international links were strengthened via the annual Herstmonceux Conferences which were initiated by the Astronomer Royal, Richard Woolley. Starting in 1957, these conferences ran throughout the Herstmonceux years, and continued under the same title at Cambridge. The 39th and final conference was held in July 1998. Later that year, as the Observatory was in the throes of being shut down. Margaret Penston compiled a list of all the Herstmonceux Conferences which was subsequently published in the last edition of the house Journal Spectrum. A scan of the article is reproduced below.
